In a previous post I showed you, how to install nginx on debian, see "Install Nginx, FastCGI, PHP5, MySQL on Debian and Ubuntu.". This step by step guide shows you how to install the latest version of nginx without using the package manager apt-get or aptitude.
First create a directory where you can download the source code and unpack it.
Then download the latest version of nginx. Right now is 0.8.53 the latest version.
unpack the package.
tar -zxvf nginx-0.8.53.tar.gz
To install and configure nginx you need to install other packages too, packages like open ssl library and PCRE Library.
sudo aptitude install libc6 libpcre3 libpcre3-dev libpcrecpp0 libssl0.9.8 libssl-dev zlib1g zlib1g-dev lsb-base
sudo make install
nginx is installed in /usr/local/nginx, but nginx binary file is in /usr/local/sbin.
to start nginx run this.
that's all. congratulations now you have installed nginx from source code on your server. time to take a cup of tea!
